Western Ukraine

One of land's on which the Slav's were autochthons, it appeared in chronicles together with Kyiv, Chernihiv or Pereyaslav. It is Western Ukraine that preserved the state-building traditions after the decline of Kyiv Rus. It suffered from foreign invaders, national oppression, betrayal of local nobility, and, nevertheless, became the first candle of national Renaissance. And for ever it has been associated with National Idea. LVIV. Regional center located in Halychyna (Galicia) just on the route connecting Western and Eastern Europe, 544 km far from Kyiv. CARPATHIANS Even among Ukrainian top sightseeing places the Carpathians, "gem of Ukraine", are the corner to be visited, admired and returned. Regional center located in the Southwest of Ukraine, 650 km far from Kyiv. The population is 250 thousands. The capital of scenic Bukovyna stretches along banks of the Prut. During centuries this Ukrainian town went through many dramatical events. The population is 300 thousands. Since the 13th c. this town has been playing an important part in the Ukrainian commerce. PODILLYA This word itself means "dale", though this land is crossed by hills creating the landscape special just for it. Many of them are crowned by medieval castles, as Kamyanets-Podilsky, Kremenets, Buchach, etc., monasteries, as Pochayivska Lavra, the second Ortodox sacred place in Ukraine after Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, with golden domes sparkling on the blue sky background many miles away from the town. Podillya is also the world's place of piligrimage for hassids as Medzhybyzh is the town where Israel Ben Elizer Baal Shem Tova, the founder of this religious movement in Judaism, lived and died. KHMELNYTSKY. Regional center located on the Southern Buh River, 387 km far from Kyiv. The population is 170 thousands. This medieval town became one og tje national movement centers. The dramatic history of the land made it the place of mass emigration: thousands of Ukrainians had to leave the Motherland looking for the best life overseas. VINNITSYA. Regional center located on the Southern Buh River, 260 km far from Kyiv. The population is 379 thousands.
